 NEW YORK (AP) - The New York Yankees had a better week 3, but lose 3 key starters in the span of the 6 game period. SS Derek Jeter (intercostal strain - 3-4 weeks), LF Hideki Matsui (torn thumb ligament - 3 weeks), and SP AJ Burnett (elbow strain - 6 weeks) will all be on the shelf for the next 3 to 6 weeks. With the recent injuries, the Yankees announced today they will be bringing up Scranton Wilkes-Barre team leaders LF Melky Cabrera (3- 12 -.288), SP Phil Hughes (2-1-4.45 in 4 games), and 2B Angel Berroa (2-7-.303).The injury is not good for Matsui who is in a contract year, and who is coming off a short played 2008 season. "If Melky can continue to hit the ball fairly well, he has a good chance of staying with us until his play shows us different", GM Denea said early this afternoon. Even though the Yankees came back to .500 on the year, they continue to struggle behind Ace CC Sabathia (1-3 - 9.00 in 18IP). "Its disappointing ya know?", said Sabathia. "I was brought in here to be the #1 guy, and to this point, I have been acting more like a #5 starter". The team hopes CC will get things in order with Burnett (1-0-2.87 in 3 games) being out for a good chunk of this early season. "I'm really impressed with the way Cody Ransom has filled the corner with A-Rod being sidelined", said Denea. Ransom has helped lift the team in the past 7 games batting .440 with 3 HR and 7 RBI's, while Nick Swisher can't seem to see the ball batting .095 with 10 strikeouts in his last 19 AB's. Yankees finish off this upcoming period with a tough 3 game stretch against AL West leader Los Angeles Angels. |
