The Giants never really wanted to lose Barry Zito. Turns out, he didnt want to be gone either. The Giants exposed Zito to waviers where he was snatched up. The move saved the Giants over 100 million in salary guaranteed to Zito over the next 5 years. He had played very well for the team but that contract really had the team tight with the flexibility to improve the team. While sad to see him go, the cap flexibility was crucial. To GM Tom Bohrer's surprise, Zito was promptly cut and turned out back on the free market. "I am still not clear what happened," GM Bohrer said. Rumors are swirling that Zito's laid back style did not sit well with the brass there and they decided to just dump him. One mans trash is anothers treasure. Bohrer quickly reached out to Barry with a 1 year 3 million dollar deal to man a spot in the rotation...and Barry is happy to be back in San Francisco. Now the Giants just hope he pitches another sub 4 era season as he did last year. In other moves, the Giants signed Andruw Jones to a one year deal. He will be in the starting lineup and playing CF. Bohrer says, "we need his pop and despite a poor average, he gets on base a lot." |
